Historical Overview

The National Heisey Glass Museum in Newark, Ohio is home to one of the oldest and most famous glass factories in America. The city had key ingredients that were needed for this labor-intensive process like excellent silica sand, ample natural gas supplies (since it was used as fuel), fresh water from Lake Erie’s shoreline which gave them access to another type of substitute coal.

Mission

The National Heisey Glass Museum has a mission to preserve, collect, and interpret the products of the A.H. Heisey & Company from 1896-1957. The museum is in Newark and is supported by members of the A.H. Heisey Collectors of America Inc., as well as those who visit it for its displays and information about glass from that time period.

What made Newark stand out?

It was their workers who had been trained to work in this industry. Workers were hard at work during hard times when other industries were failing or closing down. They have been in the industry since 1877 and it only expanded because of industrialization.

Heisey Glass was made in Newark, Ohio. They had all the ingredients they needed, like sand for making glass and natural gas for heating it. Heisey’s designs would go around the world, including into the hands of people who are famous or who make movies. The Heisey Glass Factory operated from 1896 to 1957, but its history still lives on today in a museum called the National Heisey Glass Museum. There’s a video about how important this factory was to Newark’s history and its hand-made glass.

How long will it take to explore the museum?

The museum will take about two hours to explore. It consists of three buildings and three floors. In addition to displaying the art of glassware, there is a display that illustrates the manufacture of glassware. A Heisey in Hollywood display will let film buffs find out which actors wore Heisey glasses in their movies.

Why should you visit the National Heisey Glass Museum?

The National Heisey Glass Museum is a place for people who like glassware and want to know more about it. The museum has a big collection and also has an addition.  It is also a place for people who are interested in A.H. Heisey & Company’s products to see an outstanding collection of them.
