A Brief History of the Arboretum

The Dawes Arboretum was started in 1929. It was started by Beman Dawes who lived in Marietta when he was young. His father ran a lumber company, and he wanted to do something with trees. He bought 140 acres of the old Brumback farm so that people could visit it for free and see how they grow.

The Dawes family renamed their farm “Daweswood” and the old brick farmhouse became their country home. Now Beman and Bertie’s four sons and daughter loved nature, too. Daweswood was both a retreat for the family in Columbus, as well as a place to pursue their horticultural interests. They planted trees at Daweswood, trying to get them from all over the world that could survive in central Ohio. Beman’s aim was to inspire people to plant trees. He planted trees at Daweswood. He wanted to get trees from all around the world. The first tree was planted in 1917 and it was a maple tree.

The Dawes Arboretum is a place with many different types of plants. They started the arboretum as a private foundation, which means that they wanted people to come and enjoy it.

Funds from the arboretum are for helping to continue running the place.
