There are many types of headaches that affect millions of people all over the world. Each kind can have a different set of symptoms, causes, and treatments. Understanding the type of headache is the first step to knowing how to relieve or treat it. Fortunately, there are many effective treatment options available for the most common types of headaches.

What is a headache?

Headache is a type of pain that occurs around the head or face. It is often described as sharp, dull, throbbing, or constant. The severity of a headache depends on its location, cause, and frequency. Most headaches are not serious and do not need immediate medical attention. However, some headaches can result in life-threatening conditions and require urgent medical care.

What causes headaches?Managing headache

The pain felt during headache episodes is a result of the interconnecting signals among the brain, blood vessels, and surrounding nerves. During a headache, different processes activate specific nerves that affect the muscles and blood vessels around the head. These nerves send signals to the brain to feel the pain.

What are the most common types of headaches?

  • Tension-type headaches
  • Migraine headaches.
  • Cluster headaches.
  • New daily persistent headaches (NDPH).
  • Sinus headaches
  • Spinal headaches
  • Cervicogenic headaches (originating from the neck)
  • Medication overuse headaches

Headache treatments

One of the most critical parts of headache treatment is understanding the cause and the triggers. Knowing these through the help of keeping a log can reduce headache attacks. Although there are various medication options for headaches, not all headaches respond to these. Some other treatment alternatives offer promising results to a person who suffers from headaches.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractors help relieve headaches by performing manual spinal adjustments to relieve pressure and tension around the nerve in the neck and back. Some headaches arise from compressed nerves and tensed muscles, and relieving this through chiropractic treatment helps achieve complete alleviation from headaches.

Stress management

Stress management techniques are different practices to reduce the amount of stress experienced by a person. One technique primarily used for stress management is Relaxation through deep breathing, muscle relaxation, mental images, and music.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a technique that helps a person recognize tension building in the body. In this approach, a person learns the body mechanisms that arise during stressful situations and the ways to manage these mechanisms. During a biofeedback session, sensors are attached to the body to monitor the involuntary physical responses to headaches, including increased heart rate, breathing, pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, muscle tension, and brain activity.

Cold Laser Therapy for Chronic Headaches

Cold laser therapy uses infrared light from a light-emitting diode (LED) and low-level lasers (LLL) to treat chronic pain, including cluster headaches, TMJ, and migraine headaches. It is a non-invasive and safe alternative to treating pain. Due to the low level of light emitted, it does not burn the skin; instead, it penetrates deep into the tissues that cause positive physiological reactions deep into the cellular level.
